In this text I mention the 13 best 3-in-1 waterproof men’s jackets that will be on the market in 2020. All coats of famous brands are made of high quality materials.
Why use the 3 in 1 jacket
I think this should be clear, and this is explained in detail in my separate text. It is therefore sufficient to point out here that you have two separate coats that can be used separately and together.
Normally (but not always) the inner jacket is a fleece that can be used in all cold weather conditions, but without rain. The outer jacket is a waterproof raincoat, usually also breathable, and you can use it all year round as a light raincoat.
My own jacket is of this type and I live in an area where it rains a lot, so I use the outdoor jacket all year round. I usually use the inner membrane separately, at home or in the city. I use them together, both in the mountains and in the region where I live in winter.
The term 3-in-1 is most commonly used incoats, and I do the same here in the text. But be aware that some people use the term which forms coats for this combination clothing, and you’ll see it in the names of some of the coats in the list below. The meaning must be clear – there are two components in the system.
You will also see the term -replacement coats which describes the fact that you can use them separately and together.
Don’t confuse these different sentences, they all describe the same type of jacket.
all-in-one coats vs. 3-in-1coats
After using so many replacement coats, I know that the comfort of some is not always good. This is especially true for those who have a very thick inner fleece jacket. From my own experience I feel more at ease in this case when two coats are not closed.
On the other hand, a good one-piece shell (i.e. a single layer insulated shell) can be much less compressed and restrictive than an alternating shell.
However, the main advantage of the 3 in 1 jacket is that you can choose the level of protection, giving you a tool for all seasons. So I use my own jackets, we have a lot of rain, so I use shell jackets all year round, and only in exceptional cases, like these days around Christmas, I add the inner layer. But I always use the inner coats separately. I currently have 4 jackets, which means I actually have 8 jackets that I can use individually. So there are many options to choose from. Because I don’t always button them up, I can even combine elements from different coats.
I usually have short sleeves (I use polo shirts in all seasons) and usually only wear my spare jacket. So, when I get home, I take off my jacket and stay in my inner jacket. That’s why I prefer to use these component vests unpackaged.
My 3-in-1 list Men’s Waterproof Jackets
Below you will find some more information about each item in the list. numbers are not intended for theformat, they are for navigation purposes only.

You call this jacket ultra-tech, so let’s see what it offers. The outer shell is a waterproof and breathable jacket with a minimalist design. It is a Colombian Omni-Tech 100% nylon twill, inherited from the Colombians and fully sealed. They do not contain waterproof and breathable digits. Note that you have or zippers, so ventilation shouldn’t be a problem with this jacket.
The inner jacket is beautifully made of 100% nylon Shadow Ripstop fabric on the outside. This is a super warm down jacket 650,a combination of 80% down and 20% feathers. On the picture above you can see how elegant it is. You can really use it as a stand-alone jacket if time permits.

Mens Columbia Sportswear Vortex Bird Jacket.
This is a very versatile and affordable and package with all the features you would expect from such a component package. One of the characteristics of this jacket is the variety of colors, so you can have it in dozens of different variations and combinations. This is so typical of Colombia.
This is one of the hottest options, which is due to several factors: They feature Columbia’s patented Omni-Heat heat reflective technology, lining, insulation and jacket. You will see that it is described as a ski jacket, but it is clearly much more than that.
One of the features I like to see here is a separate suspended inner lining which is a natural part of the jacket cover. Some of my coats have this inner lining, it brings warmth and cosiness, and it also separates the membrane layer from the body, which is good if you use it as a jacket covering in summer.
The skin of the Columbia Whirlibird is withholes, so it is a jacket with very good ventilation. But also here you have a good protection, the inner cover is a cover with 80 g synthetic insulation.
The two jackets are attached to each other by means of cufflinks and along the main front zipper.
Another important feature is the price, so the jacket is very popular, and if you look at Amazon you can find them in several sections, there is a link below.

This jacket is inspired by his minimalist raincoat, which has been around for several years. In 2018 they proposed this option, which includes a removable insulation layer. So it’s a real 3-in-1 jacket for all seasons. The rain cover is described in detail in my separate text, it is not necessary to repeat it here, just point out that it is a 2.5 layer Gore-Tex paclite.
The inner housing is a synthetic fabric with Thermal R thermal insulation and a total of 3 pockets. It’s very nice and you can use it as an outer layer yourself.
Here are some songs that might be of interest to you. Weighing 839 g, the kit is much lighter than the bastion jacket. The average length is 77 cm (30.5 inches). Click on the link for more information.
10. Patagonia snow jacket for men

The waterproof jacket with H2No membrane is also used in many climbing jackets of this famous brand. All seams are sealed and the outer fabric is also an excellent water repellent coating. Also here you have a free hanging grid, similar to the mantle of the Columbia whirlpool at the top.
The insulation you have here is made of 60 grams of synthetic material, and this, combined with several layers of fabric and air glued together, provides a lot of insulation and keeps you warm. So it’s a warm jacket, but it still doesn’t match the Columbia Whirlibird jacket.
This jacket is equipped with zippers on the outside of the shell, which provides excellent ventilation in different conditions, similar to the Columbia Whirlbird jacket.
The style and characteristics of this jacket are somewhat unique. In fact, you have 4 different options – two different sides of the inner jacket if you use it alone, one jacket alone and two jackets together, and they are all very discreet.
It is an expensive instrument, but it is covered by the extraordinary guarantee of Patagonia, and it is designed to last for a long time, so it is an investment that can cost money.

13. Under men’s armour cold-storage wearer 3 in 1 jacket
Men 3 in 1 Infrared ColdGear Wear Jacket in Storm.
The mantle is a two-layer twill with a smooth taffeta outer cover. Here you have UA Storm technology that repels water, it is a waterproof and windproof jacket, but at the same time breathable and suitable for a variety of outdoor activities and urban use.
The ColdGear infrared technology used here has a special inner lining of a soft, heat-conducting material that keeps your body warm. So it’s different than what you saw up there in those Columbia jackets. They have an imprint of molecules of ceramic in the shell, which is there to absorb the heat of the body, not to reflect it. The system stores energy when you are more active and releases it when you are less active.
They have two zippered hand pockets and a zippered chest pocket with an internal earphone outlet. There is also an internal exit on the inner layer.
The Inner shell is an advanced high-density fleece designed to absorb body heat without excess weight. It’s waterproof and fast drying, and you have extra handbags for dry weather if you want to wear it yourself.
The inner cover is connected to the outer cover by a zipper and hooks at the cuffs and behind the neck.
- It’s a very reasonable price.
- No detachable hood.
- It’s a very hot system.
- ColdGear infrared technology is based on ceramic molecules that store heat.
- Adjustable cuffs and elastic hem.
- A complete cut for total comfort.
Slightly more details on the main features of Case 3 in.
All jackets described here are waterproof outer jackets, but you should be aware that there are interchangeable jackets that are not completely waterproof. However, I would not consider such cases. For my needs, the jacket must be waterproof. Actually, I don’t have anything that’s not waterproof. If I want a jacket that is not waterproof, I can always use the inner layer of some of my replacement jackets.
You can read about the types of waterproof membranes in my separate text. In general you have Gore-Tex, but some brands have their own material. You’ve seen some, like H2No, MemBrain, TexaPore, but there are many more. Gore-Tex is always the best, and you can read it in my other text.
It’s easy to make the jacket waterproof, but it’s also important to make it breathable. I had a jacket so out of breath, and it was a terrible choice. Any physical activity will definitely get you wet, so don’t waste money, you won’t be able to use it for nothing.
I have dealt with this issue in my text, which I mentioned before, so there is no need to repeat it here. How does this mechanism work? The idea is that the pores of the membranes are small enough to prevent rainwater from entering, but large enough to allow the vapours (sweat) to escape from the molecules, it is just as simple.
I have jackets with breathable values between 5000 and 12000 (that’s in g/m²/24h), and I can feel the difference between jackets with such values. But it’s never perfect, and it depends on what you do. To be honest, if you’re hiking or climbing, you’ll always sweat, believe me.
Insulation – inner jackets
You usually have a polar or a non-polar inner jacket and have seen examples of both in the text above. I’ve already said that I use them unbuttoned, so in situations like this where you put on and take off a jacket, you might have a better experience with an inner jacket without flislin. This is because this inner shell is usually made of smooth material (polyester), which makes it easier to put on. Also from an aesthetic point of view, some of these unsealed jackets can look really cool when used separately.
But also fleece remains a good choice, especially the microfleece inner jacket with the number 100 (you have it in the above mentioned jacket The North Face Evolve II). In fact, I’m writing this text in a fleece jacket as I bought it years ago, and I can tell you that these materials are really beautiful and seem to last forever.
Storm clip with zipper
The long zipper at the front is the area where you can expect the water to drain away. It is therefore very important to have a storm flap to protect against lightning. Some extra large coats have double flaps, one on each side to overlap them, and Velcro straps to keep them in place. My wife has such a cool Jack Wolfskin jacket. With this construction no rainwater goes through at all. Although it can be a bit boring in everyday life, you have a lot of work to do to get to the flash.
If you plan to use your jacket in areas where it rains a lot, all seams should be secured. You have seen an example above (Colombian jacket), where the seams are only critically glued. It may be suitable for ski jackets, but it won’t be my first choice for my alpine tours. Read more about this in my separate text.
Ventilation openings under the arms
That’s good, but it depends on what you do. None of the coats I use now have holes like this. These are usually ventilation holes in the flashes, which means that water can get in. But my wife and daughters have jackets with these zippers, and the fact is, they never complained.
The more the better, the easier. I’d never think of a jacket without a wallet. Yes, there are raincoats, some of which can be seen here. Although I can’t remember a 3-in-1 jacket with this design.
Thank you for reading it. Are you using a spare jacket? I would like to hear from you, please use the comment field below. If you prefer a standard winter jacket, take a look at this list of the best insulated jackets for men. Have a nice day.
